In April, scholars at Warren Township High School held a book club discussion at Lovely Thai in Grayslake.  Juniors and seniors missed reading and discussing books outside of the classroom.  They came up with book suggestions and voted on "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card.  At the meeting these passionate readers talked about characters' internal struggles, overcoming challenges, and how these moments relate to real life circumstances.  Conversation also branched out to making personal connections and at one point led to sharing other forms…Read more

CHICAGO – The Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) announced that the Schuler Scholar Program has selected AUSL’s Collins Academy High School to provide select high-performance incoming freshman with long-term academic mentoring and support services beginning the 2012-2013 school year. On January 14th and February 4th of 2012, scholars from Maine East High School volunteered their time and energy assisting at the WINGS Program Resale Store in Niles, Illinois.  WINGS, which stands for Women In Need Growing Stronger, provides housing, counseling, and other resources for women who are victims of domestic abuse or homelessness.  All profits from the Resale Store locations directly support these programs.  While volunteering, the scholars partook in a variety of tasks, ranging from staging materials in the stock room to organizing…Read more

On Monday, January 16th 2012 the Schuler Scholar Program staff partnered with North Chicago Community Partners to conduct a service project as part of the Martin Luther King Day National Day of Service. The Schuler Scholar Program AmeriCorps volunteers, 12 SSP staff members and 10 children of staff members worked side by side with the North Chicago Community Partners team to organize and paint the nurse’s office and clean and organize the resource center at Forrestal Elementary School in North Chicago. The Schuler Summer College Program Event occurred on November 11th, 2011 at the Renaissance Chicago North Shore Hotel in Northbrook, Illinois.
