The Schuler Network

When it comes to success, who you know is just as important as what you know—a factor Schuler has incorporated into its program by providing Scholars access to professional networking and career opportunities, such as the Internship and Career Fair that took place on January 7, 2016.

A tremendous success, the Internship and Career Fair featured career consultant Claudia Montgomery, who spoke to College and Alumni Scholars on how to network and build a personal brand, as well as 35 different organizations, who were looking to hire for internships, fellowships, and full-time opportunities.

Representing two of the organizations were alumni Ajan Caneda with HealthSmart and Julio Guzman with the Lake Forest Open Lands Association. Both are graduates of Waukegan High School and had attended the fair as College Scholars in the past.

"I was recruiting summer interns for HealthSmart International and after the fair I knew there were many promising candidates to choose from. I met students from every class year and the amount of poise and professionalism was evident across the board. The diversity in majors, extracurricular involvement and career goals truly reflects the best aspects of the Schuler Scholar Program," reflected Ajan.

They weren’t the only ones impressed with our Scholars. “I was blown away by the diversity of the students at the career fair, diversity that goes beyond just ethnicity. It was an incredible range of backgrounds, interests, schools, education-levels, work experience, etc. However, there was one thing that all of them shared and showed equally - a passion to succeed and be known to the various employers,” said Alex Salvedo from Procter and Gamble. “[The career fair is] a tremendous opportunity for any employer to meet high caliber, truly motivated, and passionate individuals.”

Over 100 College and Alumni Scholars attended the event, ready to network and land opportunities. Here is what they had to say about the event:

“I loved every aspect of the event! Right off, I found the morning professional development presentation by Claudia Montgomery very useful because it helped me feel prepared to present myself in the best manner. It really helped to hear Claudia speak in a very honest and straightforward manner. Then, my experience at the actual fair was also very good. I spoke to a lot of great companies, and connected with three specific companies for which I submitted job applications. Thank you very much for putting on the event, I really appreciate the opportunity to grow as a professional, and to network with many great companies.” - Yessi Gomez, Round Lake Senior High School '12, Bucknell University '16

“I thought the professional development presentation was a perfect way to transition into a career fair and reminded me of how I should act if I want to land a job.” - Devang Patel, Maine East High School '15, Claremont McKenna College '19

“I really enjoyed the internship fair. I loved our guest speaker and my biggest takeaway was to stay connected and to make a list of the networks I have. I am working on creating a spreadsheet to do that. I also plan to apply to 4 internships.” - Jessica Ilc, Maine East High School '15, Macalester College '19

“Being able to learn new networking tips and then immediately put them into practice in a space that is filled with people that are willing to be supportive and understanding that this may be your first time actually networking is amazing. It's built up my confidence and helped me practice for events and career fairs on my college campus. It's also a great opportunity to reconnect with other Scholars and talk to them about what they've been doing over breaks and get the inside scoop on some opportunities I wasn't aware of or thinking about. Not to mention I've always gotten an internship from this fair!” - Natalia Nevarez, Round Lake High School '13, Lafayette College '17
