New partnership will increase access to top colleges for Chicago students

George Washington college prepThe Schuler Scholar Program announces a partnership with George Westinghouse College Prep in Chicago.  This brings the total of Schuler partnership schools to 14. This partnership represents a collaborative effort to make access to highly selective colleges a reality for students in the city of Chicago.

“The opportunities Schuler will provide to our students are exceptional and life-changing,” shared Patrick McGill, Principal, George Westinghouse College Prep. “The mission of the Schuler Scholar Program directly aligns with the work we do at GWCP to ensure that our students enroll, persist, and graduate from a top college or university. At Westinghouse, our students receive the very best in college and career preparation, and this partnership with Schuler will help take us to new heights.”

Candace Browdy, SSP Executive Director, shared their enthusiasm: “This partnership represents a commitment to continue pursuing innovative ways to reach students and prepare them for lifelong success.  Of the Chicago schools that applied for a Schuler partnership, George Westinghouse College Prep exemplifies our motto: ‘always Personal Best.’”

The new partnership brings the Schuler’s partnership schools to 14. The Schuler invests approximately $11,000 in each student per year of high school, which includes tutoring, ACT preparation, college visits, leadership development activities and cultural exposures. Nearly all Schuler Scholars are first-generation college students, and more than 80 percent come from minority populations that are underrepresented on college campuses. Of Scholars who complete the high school program, 100 percent go on to competitive private colleges and receive, on average, almost $50,000 in annual, non-loan financial aid from the colleges that they attend.

The Schuler Scholar Program selects Scholars in the spring of their 8th grade year and looks for students with demonstrated academic ability and intellectual curiosity.
