Evelyn Fraga

Waukegan High School, Class of 2009
Swarthmore College, Class of 2013

During her four years at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, Evy made a great impact on campus. As a freshman, Evy co-founded the organization “Swatties for a DREAM” with two friends. The organization seeks to make higher education more accessible for lower-income high school students. Swarthmore even provided funding for the group to attend a rally in Washington, DC. Evy attended the Empowering Women of Color Conference at UC Berkeley during which she gained meaningful exposure to women’s issues faced around the world and in academia. The summer after her junior year in college, Evy interned for the Latino Policy Forum, where she was a summer coordinator for their Leadership Academy. The Leadership Academy brings together leadership staff from various Latino-led/Latino-serving nonprofits to participate in a nine-month leadership program. She is a first-generation college student and the eldest of three siblings.

Before her life at Swarthmore, Evy was the vice president of her senior class at Waukegan High School and an active member of the Schuler Scholar Program. She traveled to Thailand during the summer before her senior year through the Schuler Scholar Program and says that it was “the greatest summer of [her] life.”

In the summer of 2010, after her freshmen year of college, Evy worked as a paid intern at the non-profit YouthBuild in Lake County, Illinois. She worked with low-income young adults to help them complete their education, learn skills to gain employment, and build a future for themselves and their families.

Evy graduated from Swarthmore in June of 2013 and accepted a position as an AmeriCorps Scholar Coach with the Schuler Scholar Program at North Chicago Community High School. Evy has decided to stay another year with the Schuler Scholar Program working as a Scholar Coach at North Chicago Community High School through June 2015.
