Selection Process

The annual Scholar selection process begins in the late winter when school personnel and Schuler staff identify the students who qualify to apply to the program. Students must be able to demonstrate academic achievement (via grades and/or standardized test scores) and meet at least two of the criteria that follows:

First generation in the family to attend a four-year US college
Need financial assistance in order to attend college
From a population that is typically underrepresented on college campuses
Have unique family circumstances that might qualify student for consideration as a scholar

Qualified students and their parents are invited to attend an information session at which time SSP applications are distributed. In addition to transcripts and testing history, Schuler staff considers family background information, extracurricular activities, personal essays, and teacher recommendations.

Qualified applicants who are selected to become a Schuler Scholar and successfully matriculate to a Schuler approved college or university will earn a $1,000 annual scholarship for four years of college.

Scholar Spotlight: Susan Monica Tith

Round Lake High School, Class of 2009

Scholar Susan Monica Tith In addition to graduating as the valedictorian of Round Lake High School in 2009, Susan participated on the academic and math teams, worked as a backstage crew member for the theater department, and participated in the Powderpuff team. She was also a member of the National Honor Society. Susan gained experience traveling through the Schuler Scholar Program; she volunteered as a camp leader at Camp Manito-wish in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin, enrolled in human biology courses at the University of Southern California after her sophomore year, and volunteered abroad in Poland the summer after her junior year.
