Neal was very active in the Waukegan High School community. In addition to being a musician with the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra and president of the Orchestra Council, he was an Illinois State Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. The Schuler Scholar Program provided funding for Neal to travel to New Zealand during the summer before his senior year to work on a reforestation project.
Neal is a first-generation college student from a single parent household.
