On Tuesday, November 1st, parents of freshmen Schuler College Scholars came together at Warren Township High School to assemble care packages for 74 Schuler college freshmen.  From hot chocolate and tea to popcorn and candy, the care packages will deliver freshmen many college “essentials!” Plus, packages include Schuler pennants, notepads, and water bottles so that our new College Scholars can share their Schuler pride with their campus communities. This fall Alicia Adams began her medical studies at Rush University in Chicago and was awarded the National Health Service Corps Scholarship.  This prestigious scholarship was awarded this year to 250 students with a demonstrated commitment to providing high quality primary care in underserved communities. From July 13th-17th, a group of Schuler Scholars visited the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario. This group, chosen for their love of literature and theatre, took the eight and a half hour drive to Ontario to experience world-class stagings of four Shakespearean masterpieces and one contemporary classic. They attended performances of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, Richard III, The Twelfth Night, The Merry Wives of Windsor and John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. Schuler Scholars, over the weekend of October 8th, 2011, took some of the country's finest colleges by storm, embarking on visits to Beloit College, Carleton College, Colorado College, Cornell College, Davidson College, DePauw University, Grinnell College, Lawrence University, Macalester College, Stanford University, and Vanderbilt University. On Saturday, October 8, sophomore Schuler Scholars from Maine East High School embarked on a multi-faceted exploration of Indian culture.  The evening began at India House restaurant in downtown Chicago, where scholars shared a variety of dishes family-style, including aloo gobi, chicken tikka masala, saffron rice, naan, and samosas.   The scholars then viewed a dance performance by the Natya Dance Theatre, an Indian dance company, at the Harris Theater near Millennium Park.  The performance was a fusion of storytelling and dance based on an…Read more

On a sunny August afternoon, eight Maine East Scholars visited the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Chicago, exploring several exhibitions that pushed scholars out of their comfort zones and challenged their conceptions of what art truly is.  As scholars viewed a collection of pieces by Mark Bradford, they discussed the artist’s use of shapes and collage techniques, as well as Bradford’s incorporation of social commentary into his pieces.  After perusing the exhibitions, scholars ordered burgers from the Museum Grill and ate them on…Read more

During the summer of 2010, ten scholars participated in a service project for Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans, Louisiana. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that seeks to eliminate poverty and homelessness by providing decent shelter to those in need.   Under the supervision of Habitat for Humanity leaders, the Scholars and Scholar Coaches spent five days working on a home construction site in an area ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
