Wesley Varughese Elected President of Lawrence University Student Government

03/20/2015

On March 4, 2015, Wesley Varughese officially took office as president of the Lawrence University Community Council (LUCC), the university’s student governing body. A Schuler Scholar and graduate of Warren Township High School, Wesley is a junior at Lawrence who arrived on campus and immediately became active in the community.

“I am more than ecstatic to take on my new role as president of LUCC…many changes have occurred over the past three years, and I’m excited to see how those dynamics will continue to shape Lawrence as I transition into my senior year,” Wesley said in an email. He has previously held the LUCC offices of district representative and public relations secretary.

Outside of student government, Wesley is a tour guide supervisor for the Office of Admissions and campus coordinator for KidsGive, an educational and fundraising program that provides opportunities for students in Sierra Leone. As a volunteer and student leader, Wesley has traveled to Guatemala, Sierra Leone, and Israel, and he recently returned from studying abroad at the University of Granada in Spain.

What drew Wesley to Lawrence University, a liberal arts college of 1,500 students in Appleton, Wisconsin?

“Applying to schools as a first generation college student was at the very least intimidating, but Schuler and its amazing staff opened the doors for me to discover a fantastic liberal arts like Lawrence University that fit me perfectly,” he says. Lawrence is a residential college and conservatory that offers an education built on the idea of engaged learning: the belief that a quality education is immersive and experiential, extending beyond the classroom and into everyday life on campus.

Wesley’s commitment to leadership and service makes him an excellent role model for Schuler Scholars preparing for life on a college campus. He says that participating in Schuler in high school taught him time management and how to balance his many activities, adding that “those skills have transitioned into my experiences at Lawrence and have truly prepared me to be successful as an undergraduate.”

Wesley is considering law school after he graduates in 2016. There is no doubt that whatever path he chooses, his hard work and dedication will lead to success.
