Third Annual Career and Internship Fair

By Schuler Scholar Program 01/08/2015

The Schuler Scholar Program's third annual Career and Internship Fair, held on January 7, 2015, presented Schuler Scholars in college and program alumni with a wide variety of professional opportunities. The organizations in attendance offered internship programs, fellowships, volunteer opportunities, and full-time employment in fields ranging from engineering to arts education.

A highlight of this year's fair was seeing two Schuler Scholars and one former AmeriCorps Scholar Coach representing organizations in attendance. Julio Guzman, a graduate of Waukegan High School and a senior at Colgate University, joined Lake Forest Open Lands Association's Executive Director Susie Hoffmann to promote LFOLA's summer positions. He has worked as an intern and camp counselor for their Center for Conservation Leadership summer programs. Elaura Dunning, a graduate of Round Lake High School and Smith College, represented Chicago International Charter Schools (CICS), where she is the Communications and Events Coordinator. Altagracia Montilla, a former Scholar Coach at Round Lake High School, attended the fair to recruit summer interns for the Beyond Sports Foundation, where she is the Director of Education and Social Programming.

Following the fair, Schuler Scholars participated in two workshops led by friends of the Schuler Scholar Program. Dr. Mark Clark of The Philadelphia Center delivered a session called "Leveraging Your Liberal Arts Degree in the Workplace." Abbey Perkins and Mary Dankenbring of PEAK6 Investments led "Creating an Effective Resume," a workshop designed to complement the resume reviews they offered during the fair.

Every year, this event gives Schuler Scholars an idea of the many career paths available to them as college graduates. Every student, from a pre-med major to a museum studies major, can find summer internship opportunities that will allow them to explore an aspect of their field and deepen their professional knowledge.
