Everybody Can be Great Because Everybody Can Serve

01/23/2012

On Monday, January 16th 2012 the Schuler Scholar Program staff partnered with North Chicago Community Partners to conduct a service project as part of the Martin Luther King Day National Day of Service. The Schuler Scholar Program AmeriCorps volunteers, 12 SSP staff members and 10 children of staff members worked side by side with the North Chicago Community Partners team to organize and paint the nurse’s office and clean and organize the resource center at Forrestal Elementary School in North Chicago. This project comes on the heels of the Schuler Scholar Program’s announcement that North Chicago will be the newest community served by the Program.

Megan Melloy, a second-year AmeriCorps volunteer had this to say about the experience:

Working with North Chicago Community Partners on MLK Day was an incredible opportunity to serve a community with great need. It was very satisfying to see our completed projects and know the impact we will make in bettering, even in a small way, the lives of the students and staff at Forrestal Elementary School. There are so many people at work in this community and I am so excited about the SSP’s new role in all of it.

By partnering with North Chicago Community Partners, the Schuler Scholar Program was able to serve 400+ students and teachers with this project.

NCCP’s Executive Director, Jennifer Grumhaus stated that:

The Schuler Service Day at Forrestal Elementary School in North Chicago was a tremendous success.  The scope of the projects and the amount of work that the Schuler employees tackled was phenomenal.  The Schuler team transformed five different areas in the school, and this purposeful service affected change for countless students and teachers. The creation of clean, organized and attractive spaces within the school improved the climate and will be influential for the entire community.  The power of the collaboration between Schuler, North Chicago Community Partners and the Forrestal staff was exemplified throughout the day, and the impact of what was accomplished will prove significant for a long time to come.
