Torie Bates

Waukegan High School, Class of 2009
Stanford University, Class of 2013

With a class ranking of 4/848, Torie finished strongly at Waukegan High School. In addition to her stellar academic performance, she was a three-sport athlete throughout high school and a JROTC cadet. These accomplishments (among others) helped her gain a full-ride to Stanford University. She is from a single parent (father) household and is a first generation college student.

While at Stanford, Torie participated in many extracurricular activities including teaching math to elementary school kids, mentoring high school students during the college application process, and being an active member of the Black Student Union. She also joined Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc where she was the president of her chapter, and danced for an African dance group called Kuumba. Her favorite college experience was studying abroad her junior year in Cape Town, South Africa for a semester. She graduated from Stanford with a BA in Psychology and a Minor in African and African American Studies.

During the summers of 2011 and 2012, Torie interned at Google through the BOLD internship program and fell in love! After college, she received an offer to work there full-time and couldn't turn it down. She now works at Google Headquarters in Mountain View, CA in the People Operations (Human Resources) department working on innovative projects that help develop, support, and grow Google and its employees.
