Helping high potential youth gain access into the most selective colleges and universities in the country
On Monday, January 16th 2012 the Schuler Scholar Program staff partnered with North Chicago Community Partners to conduct a service project as part of the Martin Luther King Day National Day of Service.
I first found out about the Princeton University Summer Journalism Program from a search I did online, but it was an e-mail I received from Rob, the director of College Counseling, that really encouraged me to apply. I had to write a couple essays, send in transcripts, teacher recommendations, test scores, and go through an interview, but on April 15, I finally received my acceptance e-mail to the Princeton University Summer Journalism Program.
According to the US News and World Report data, applying under the Early Decision Plan can significantly increase your chances of being accepted to college. For years, only the wealthiest students have used this method of applying, as shopping for the best bargain was not a particular concern. However, with net-price calculators becoming the norm and more colleges guaranteeing to meet 100% demonstrated need with limited (or what I like say “reasonable”) loans, more low and middle income students are getting in on the action.
The Schuler Summer College Program Event occurred on November 11th, 2011 at the Renaissance Chicago North Shore Hotel in Northbrook, Illinois. The fifth annual Schuler sponsored event hosted 19 colleges and 150 students for the day.
On Monday, November 21st at Warren Township High School’s O’Plaine Campus, Schuler Scholars either in their senior year of high school or at varying stages of their post-secondary lives met up, along with their parents, to discuss college life, the transition to college, and how the parent-student relationship changes upon matriculation to college.
A 2010 graduate of Waukegan High School, Schuler College Scholar Kathleen O'Connor has been tearing up the volleyball courts as a sophomore outside hitter for the Cornell College Rams varsity squad.
On the morning of November 5th, 25 freshman and sophomore scholars from Maine East High School volunteered their time and energy at the St. Columbanus Parish Food Pantry. The pantry serves over 500 families per week, providing food and other necessities in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the south side of Chicago.
On Tuesday, November 1st, parents of freshmen Schuler College Scholars came together at Warren Township High School to assemble care packages for 74 Schuler college freshmen. From hot chocolate and tea to popcorn and candy, the care packages will deliver freshmen many college “essentials!”
On October 29th five Highland Park Scholars visited the Polish Museum of America. October is Polish Heritage month; and in an effort to expose the Scholars to the histories, experiences, and contributions of various ethnic groups, a visit to this historic gem in Chicago’s West Town community was arranged. This trip also included lunch at an authentic Polish restaurant that has been in West Town for thirty-five years.
This fall Alicia Adams began her medical studies at Rush University in Chicago and was awarded the National Health Service Corps Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship was awarded this year to 250 students with a demonstrated commitment to providing high quality primary care in underserved communities.
